So it requires a bit trial and error with the RXs to get them to work. And I got a rather aged Blade mQX to work using 6CH and a PPM length of 22ms instead of the standard 22.5ms. I got several Orange and Spektrum 6CH RXs working as expected when setting the PPM protocol to 6CH in the 9X. There's a section describing that the possibility to connect without rebinding depends on the mode, protocol and channels used during bind. But then I took a closer look at the manual provided here. Initially, the module almost drove me nuts because it needed rebinding the RXs on every power cycle. It doesn't fit the bay out of the box but that can be fixed easily either by removing the plastic housing around the module pins of the 9X or by removing some material from the module casing.
